Boogie Off Champion 2008
So we have a winner for the final round of 2008, and yet again it's Bezmondo coming on strong with Jimmy Williams classic, All My Lovin'. Should say thanks to Nigel for being a wise adjudicator once again. Plus also for reminiscing about when these tunes were being played on the London pirates JFM and Centreforce FM back in the day.
What it all means is Bez was the convincing winner of the 2008 championship with a resounding 4 wins. In 2nd place was my good self with 2 wins. Followed by the rest with a grand total of zero between them. So big up yourself Bez, all that digging has paid off. The rest of you need to get your knees dirty and spend some time crouched over dusty record boxes.
We are taking a break from all this rivalry over xmas but the boogie off should be back in 2009. In the meantime why not take a moment to vote for your favourite winning entry to the 2008 contest. The tunes are all up in the side panel for your listening pleasure.

All of my Lovin'
Incoming Round 6 entry from Bezmondo
One last try at something different this week before I resort to my sweet lady vocals that have seen me stake my claims in pole position for the boogie off championship. After my mauling last round by the very man who came round to my house and encouraged me to enter my military protohouse entry, I have to admit to being a bit hurt, Sternfunk your cards have been marked!
Jimmy Williams, what can I say but truly a boogie classic, well known tune but still up there.

Molecular boogie
This week's selection is all about the cover. Featuring a vortex dancing with a molecule model, you can just feel the electricity flowing around the 12inches of cardboard. I wonder what is brewing in those test tubes, maybe the same stuff that they are singing about. The song is the lead off tune from the self titled album by Khemistry. All it needs is a warning sticker: this record could cause an adverse reaction in your body, jerking and shaking possible.

Face Slap In Super Slow Motion - Watch more Free Videos
Is it p-funk? Is it boogie? It's a bit of both and it's the winner of round 5. Step forward Terry Burrus & Transe with Love Rockin. In my opinion it contains the best lyric of the competition so far, slap my face, baby, slap it, but then I would say that as it was my entry.

Back into time - Volume 1, Side 2
Back when I had long hair and was living in an upside down world, I received a little package in the post. Within that package was TI2TB Volume 1 on C90 cassette. On the tape deck it went and we danced around our kitchen in Melbourne whilst drinking Thai whiskey imagining we were back home, partying on the Thames. No doubt Bez, Hudge and Rich had a lot of fun making the tape, so enjoy this never before digitally released mix-up. Its a bit crackly around the edges but then again how many of your 1980's Top 40 tapes are still in good condition? Volumes 2 to 18 will follow pretty soon.

Get it on
I do not know anything about this tune... I have had it a fare few years and only know it's called GET IT ON.... a proper boogie number on the disco edge but a serious groover with a killer bass.....
I have no image to give as it is on a re-press bootleg but this one reminds me of this tune... just Pimp'n Boogie!
GET IT ON......

Slap my face
With a bassline to shake your innards, a quirky vocal and a classic vocal line, this tune is the dogs nadgers. The first ever production from the piano prodigy that is Terry Burrus, responsible for epic piano arrangements such as the one on Nuyorican Soul - Its Alright, I Feel it. Loving the vocal dexterity from Transe on this one. Slap my face, baby, slap it.

Aerobic boogie
Bez is still up to his neck in nappies, so here's his entry.
Hearing the intro, I originally bought this tune thinking I could add it to my 'Private Benjamin Soundtrack' and collection of other military training recordings, to my surprise it actually developed into quite a good boogie tune. Leaving my love of the sweet lady vocal aside this round, I thought I would try something different this week, by hoping to touch the current predilections of Sternfunk and Slippa Irie for all things 'protohouse'. This tune is possibly an early example of boogie meets aerobics music, so get your dance pumps and legwarmers on, get sweaty and do what the song says, work that body!

Its Bez again
So can you guess who won round 4? Its Bez with Come Let Me Love You and its starting to become a landslide. To be fair, Miss Lady Day has got the most points of all the tunes posted so far. Its a great tune and an outright boogie classic. Well in chaps for some great selections, looks like round 5 has started already...

One way - Come Dance With Me BOOGIE OFF PART 5
Come Dance With Me taken from the (Six track EP)ONE WAY
One Way was an R&B/funk band that was popular in the late 1970s and throughout most of the 1980s. One Way was formed in 1979 in Detroit, Michigan and were originally known as Soul Partners. Al Hudson, Alicia Meyers, guitarists Dave Roberson and Cortez Harris, bassist Kevin McCord, drummer Gregory Green and keyboardist Jonathan Meadows were the original members. They first recorded as "Al Hudson and the Partners", scoring an R&B hit on the ABC label called "You Can Do It" in 1979. At that time, however, ABC records was in the process of being taken over by MCA as part of a buyout, and when the band moved to the MCA label, they subsequently changed their name to One Way featuring Al Hudson before becoming One Way. They were on MCA Records from 1980 to 1988. They scored five Top Ten R&B hits, with the biggest being "Cutie Pie," which reached number four in 1982. Candye Edwards was the female lead of the group from 1981 to 1985. Candye's debut was on the "Pull Fancy Dancer" album, where she belted out a very soulful riff in the intro. Edwards remained with the group throughout the biggest successes, including "Cutie Pie." They moved to Capitol Records in 1988, where they released their final album A New Beginning in 1989.

Straight outta Canada.
Hudge is on the road this week so I'm posting his babble....
Ah Monsieur Slippa some Canadian Boogie badness right under your nose. Not only is this a straight up banger but the guy also looks a bit like you too! A possible new look maybe? I gotta get extra points for that?
Super talented Gino was one of those really annoying people that were good at everything, singing the vocals (main and background), playing guitar (acoustic and rhythm),keyboards, drums, percussion as well as doing the arrangement , the production(producing under the name Kebekelektrik), the mixing and even credited for the art direction(although judging by Jens's new look the latter might have left a little something to be desired).
I put this this tune on the the show reel mix for Solar Radio and it got me the job so i love this nugget and is feature it regularly on the show.
This all im gonna say apart from go and buy this and play it out and watch the floor burn. Ha ha, show me the points bieeatchis.
PS please grow a handle bar tash and get a sky blue guitar Jensen. If you haven't already that is!

INSTANT FUNK
Welcome to a true boogie classic... found on the B side of a much loved 12" and sung by the extraordinary Bunny Sigler, I have always felt this had a certain something to move the floor, it's less played and as such has the wow factor every time... appreciated by the connoisseur and the layman alike it packs a well written beat from the off and when the guitar break kicks in it lifts the track to a level where 'BOOGIE' is the only description for what it becomes.... Like all good boogie it has a section where you you wonder what was going on in the recording studio.... and just as this registers on the brain... Back comes the boogie to Slap, Slap and Lickady Lap your body!!!! Thank you Instant Funk.

Syreeta- Move it do it
You're the one
It seems like a lot of boogie tunes are recorded by either one hit wonders or backing singers who have a couple of their own hits. Bez's selection of Jeanette Lady Day is a good example of the former, whilst mine is by Katie Kissoon, who is still to this day singing back-up for artists such as Robbie Williams and Van Morrison. Now to class her as just a back-up singer would be doing her a disservice. She had a number of slushy chart hits in the 70's when teamed up with her brother Mac. But she only recorded 3 tunes under her own name before returning to singing back-up to the likes of Wham and Eric Clapton.
I managed to track down a copy of this from a Dutch dealer at a reasonable price but don't think there are too many copies of this around. Big up the Beat Electric crew for turning me onto this one.

I'm a Lady
Round 4 is kicking off with Bez's latest selection. Here's what he has to say about it.
Continuing my preference for the lady vocals, this wonderful tune starts with a lady grunting and natty flute, need I say any more, it's gotta win just for that combo, if it doesn't win this round then next week I will post a tune containing James Galway grunting while playing his natty flute. You have been warned!

Yeah it's me...
There's a lot to be said for letting someone down gradually when it's all over in a relationship. When your name is Sinnamon, you record the dumping conversation and put it on a boogie record. Callous and harsh you may say but it makes for one hell of a dancefloor burner and the winner of week 3 of the boogie off. Well in Bez for his 2nd winning entry. Might be time for the rest of the crew to pull up their socks before he starts to run away with the competition.
As a little bonus here's the instrumental version in its full 14 minute glory.

The Beginning Vol 1 TI2TB
What can i say FINALLY, the Original mix including one of my favourite tunes of all time (Logg -Dancing into the stars) this is where it began the love affair which grows stronger the longer we stay together, ahaahaah sounds like a song?
All i can say i was another clubber getting bored with the same repetitive beats i was hearing in the clubs and still to this day!
then
David Kelly dragged me along to what was the second Boat Party what was i hearing rare groove disco funk house hip hop all mixed together i was in heaven thats when i fell in love with TI2TB.
I had met Bez,Jensen,Hudge,Rich, and Charlie a few years before the Boat Parties i couldn't say i knew them i knew of them one thing, i can say from my heart if ever they needed my help or a roof or pretty much anything i got your back.
It was and still is a pleasure.
My proudest moment and most nerve racking was my first and last set on the Boat.
An avid record buyers since the age of 11 and trust me all my family loves music, my 7th birthday 1978 was a Sound System Big Box speakers and a strange smell lingering in the air!.
I think that was when i first notice the power of music.

You Saved My Day
Yo, Yo YO.... always late to the party.... I hope you all can forgive me my late entry.... ?? Anyway... was lucky enough to go and see a living legend... Mr Stevie Wonder... last night, it was a 'lifes long' dream fulfilled, and he is as good as I ever expected if not better... Whilst dancing around at an all-seater venue - upsetting my neighbours.... I realised Boogie cannot be postponed, you might only get one chance to do something or see someone, I felt the big man tell me... get up and do your boogie thing... so, late or not, this is how I felt yesterday, I was saved, my day returned to me full of positivity and joy.... Boogie classic or not, I hope Cheryl can save your day today!
CHERYL LYNN - YOU SAVED MY DAY.
Peace and enjoy - I actually don't care if I win this round.... BIG UP THE MAN LIKE STEVIE WONDER!!!

Do the micro!!
O.k the Boogie off just got surreal.Welcome to the swirling, phazing, ghetto disco workout that is Microwave Boogie. The band aint that tight but man have they got it going on. A full power rootsy jam session with plenty of sing along chants and whoops all in honour of that indispensible kitchen utensil.
I was gonna save this for our novelty round but after a few listens it was clear this aint no gimmick record. Proper party madness. It is really a disco funk track but hey, as the man said 'boogie is a state of mind' So microwave your minds folks.

Premier League
After some successful ebay smash and grab missions over the last couple of weeks, the first spoils of auction have started to land on my doorstep. This tune is a proto-house, 4 to the floor nugget. Starting off all balearic with bird and water noises, it soon steps up with some tuff drum and bass. There is a long and noodly synth solo towards the end which is credited to Fred Zarr. He was a busy man in the 80's, featuring on many classics from acts such as The Strikers and also playing the Moog on hits like Holiday by Madonna.

Sinnamon sticks
I am still trying to decide which tune to post this week, so in the meantime I'm posting on behalf of Bez. Here's his spiel:
All good emotive boogie should start with a narrative, and what better way to start than with a fake telephone conversation: 'I will not be needing your loving services no more........'. Though they say hell hath no fury like a women scorned, its good to see Sinnamon was brought up properly and is still grateful for being dumped and finding someone new. Personally I would say good riddance as anyone that uses the term 'loving services' is a user and probably treats her fella like some sort of love plumber!

Scores on the doors!
Had a really tough time with this weeks selection - all awesome and diverse - showing the true nature of Boogie - as Big Bez said - it's and art form not a science!! so without further ado....
Stern Funk - 8.5 (nearly 9 loved this tune – my type of boogie !)
Bezmondo - 8 (truly excellent - enjoyed this was a close run thing with Mr Stern)
Slipper Ire- 7.5 (a bit unusual but it has grown on me and I love it – can see it dropping on the dancefloor)
DJ Hudge - 7 (a wicked tune but not quite boogie enough for me / see it more in a “Frankie Valley” vain - I know, I Know - we don't see eye to boogie eye on this issue, but still rate the tune!)
Uncle Biggie - 6.5 (not your actual entry for round 2 but a great tune none the less - will the real Mr Biggie please stand up, please stand up)!

THE CROWN - Gary Byrd & the BT Experience with Stevie Wonder
THE CROWN - what a tune!!
Now I'm not one for research, relying on instinct and the ladies on the dance floor.... this tune never fails with both gets me jumping up to boogie on down every time I hear it!
however...
With Mr Byrd, The BT Experience, Stevie Wonder and the sultry sweet vocals of Crystal Blake... I had to know more.... Luckily they wrote it on the back of the sleeve - which means I must have the original 12" - ha ha ha ;-)
Gary started a project into music colaborating with General Bass, Hank Cameron, Gerry Bledsoe & Gerry Boulding - recorded at wonderland studios and mastered at studio 55..... what you have here is an true example of musical genius reaching it's peak... the wordsmith Mr Byrd has blended verse with chorus using two lead vocals to represent all that is soul, whilst keeping the essence of what i consider dancefloor boogie , a killer bass breakdowns....
Enjoy this truly exceptional tune & whether I win this round or not - I hope you all recognise the magnitude of this tune!!!

Bring on the Boogie Crown - this week I win!!

soul fire
What can I say about this. Its emotional. This records makes you want to leave the rat race behind, stroll out to the forest with your loved one, bring a picnic, a fine wine perhaps, some pillows, lie back in the long grass, stare up and thank the lord creator for making the world so Goddamn beautiful. I think i'm gonna cry.

Too much!!!
Beautiful Boogie! What can i say this is a straight up boogie banger that im waking up singing at the moment. I played this on the radio last week and got about 10 calls asking about it.
This does it for me. I think the guitar and synths layer perfectly in the intro and then sit back nicely for the vocals. Although the 8 bar bridge to the chorus is a tad on the cheese side, after a while you kinda get into that too. The chorus is oh oh oh so fine with beautiful harmonies that just make you smile. There`s a staunch break down at 4.23 that comes alive with lovely live kick drum sound and a laid back rollin bass. Listen to this in your headphones, check the drums and get your head nod on! Booom

Can't get enough of Carol
Lets amp this up for the second round. The version I have of this back in the UK, currently sitting in my Dad's garage getting dusty, has an intro where Carol thanks all the New York metro DJ's. I'm sure they were thanking her for such a surefire dancefloor filler. Bass, piano and synths all combining together to make you sweat. Look out for the Ulysses 82 edit of this as well which leaves all the components in there, extends the intro and the bass firing.

Sharon Brown - Specialize in Love
As the triumphant winner of round one, the big man gets to post first. So to kick off round 2 here is Bez's boogie blurb.
Don't know much about Sharon Brown, what I do know is that this tune is a mean little boogie banger, out in 1982 and mixed by Tee Scott, it is truly a killer. Greg Wilson opened my ears (I think so anyway as I was a little bit frazzled most of the weekend) to this tune at the Rizla Bar at Bestival last year, in what I reckon was the best set I have heard for years. Check it out. Pure class, without a hint of cheese.

Boogie is an artform not a science
After much heated discussion, contentious marking and debate about what is boogie, we have a winner of round one. What was supposed to be over in a week has dragged on for a month but finally we made it to a decision. The inaugural winner of the boogie off is Donna McGhee - You Should Have Told Me as submitted by Bezmondo.
I'm going to keep this post short and sweet as there has been enough said about this weeks' entries. But if there is anyone vaguely bothered what the scores were then contact us and we'll let you know. So well done Bez, keep 'em coming and bring on round 2. In the meantime I thought I would post a couple of songs which sum up what the competition is all about. Couldn't have said it better myself Errol.
Hot Chocolate - Mindless Boogie
Hot Chocolate - Everyone's a Winner
THIS BICKERING IS POINTLESS
In the words of Imperial Despot Grand Moff Tarkin - 'This bickering is pointless'
From this day forth let love into the world and cease this endless boogie bickering
I agree with the Slipper (aka Jensen) that we should just post the tunes, give our marks and leave it at that. Hopefully this will encourage the outside world to get involved, post comments, download, and maybe even challenge in future boogie offs?
I definitely think there is scope to open the competition to the masses? maybe with a couple of tickets for our next boat party as prizes for the outstanding boogie tune entered from the outside world? watch this blog!

Ramona Brooks 'I Dont Want You Back'
Ok here we go on behalf of latecomer dj hudge we have the last minute lady ramona...
Just when you thought you`d got away without the hudge. Boo yaa.
On the right side of that fine line between Boogie and Disco im gonna hit you off with Ramona Brooks and her 1980 track 'I Dont Want You Back' on Q records for my first installment.
With awesome production this tune comprises an expertly placed detuned guitar, big strings and a concrete percussive platform in the chorus that sets you up nicely for Ramona`s soulful vocal style and the killer slap bass breakdown just over half way through. Get ready for another wash Bez!
I`ve got it on a re-issue not original but its still a choice find im sure you`ll agree.
This tune is dope! Enjoy!

Reach Up - Toney Lee
A warm up tune for the boogie off - an unusual number with a killer bass - a truly cheesy lyric " sung by a bloke in an 80's leather jacket to boot" much sampled and copied through most genre's of house music.... I chose this as it is a hidden gem......
enjoy and mark me up as I have this on original Vinyl...

Unsung Boogie Queen
Disclaimer: This boogie off entry is going up on behalf of the busy new father in the TI2TB family, Bez. Well, I'm not taking the blame for his smut.
Wow, I cannot get enough of this tune, I am wet just thinking about it, quality quality quality, boogie as it should be: fat, soulful vocals and with a little bit for you electro boogie monsters out there. Donna is an unsung boogie queen, better known for 'it ain't no big thing' and the big TI2TB fave 'Mr Blind Man'. She pulls out all the stops in this mega rare 12". Try and find it at your peril, its going for silly money at the moment. I had to get it from a Ebay dealer in the states. Better go and wipe myself down before I listen to it again!

History of hip-hop
I am now able to drive on the right hand side of the road after passing my Canadian road test at the second attempt. Considering I work half an hour away from Whistler in Pemberton it's just as well. Finally I can get to drive our new car to work and appreciate being a car owner again with all the associated pleasures and pains. The best thing is cranking the tunes and preparing playlists to match the time it takes to drive there and back.
One thing which is on rotation on the ipod, is the history of hip-hop podcasts as recorded by the Rub. If you don't know about them already, this crew are party DJ's out of New York. So far they have recorded 21 volumes covering 1979 to 1999 full of familiar stuff and new. Can't recommend it enough, particularly for driving mountain roads. Here's the link.

Bridge slapping
Steely Dan - Peg is a classic boat party tune rinsed by our man Mr Bezmondo. Check out the video where they explain how the song was composed. Its fascinating to see how this tune was crafted and interesting that it took a fair few attempts to get the guitar solo down. Great candid moments from the session musicians as well. Especially from the bass guitarist, Mr Chuck Rainey. He comes out with a top quote that could easily have come from one of us, "that bridge seemed to be a slapping thing".

In 1972, the band merged with a rival band, the Soul Masters, to form Pleasure.
In 1976, they recorded with label mates Side Effect on their version of 'Always There'.

Gladys Knight and The Pips - Save the overtime for me
Gladys Maria Knight, "The Empress of Soul,"[1][2] (born May 28, 1944) is a seven-time Grammy Award-winning American R&B/soul singer, actress, humanitarian and author. She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, the most famous incarnation of which also included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.
Visions (1983) The single was "Save The Overtime (For Me)," one of several songs co-written by Gladys, Bubba and Sam Dees. They produced several tunes ("Heaven Sent"), but the hit was helmed by Rickey Smith, who also worked on "Ain't No Greater Love" with Richard Rudolph. "When You're Far Away" is an early Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis tune, though Edmund Sylvers got the production credit.

The Universal Robot Band
My Boogie Off Tune - 1st
The Universal Robot Band were an American music group comprising Gregory Carmichael, Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess and Woody Cunningham.
They were formed by Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael in 1976, their debut single was "Dance And Shake Your Tambourine". They reformed the band in 1982 for 'Barely Breaking Even'.
Profile:
The Greg Carmichael-Patrick Adams-Leroy Burgess connection produced many magical recordings, including those by Carmichael's infrequently recorded Universal Robot Band. "Barely Breakin' Even" is a legendary boogie track and the inspiration behind the name of the great British reissue label.
Consisted of the members of Kleeer - Woody Cunningham (vocals/drums), Richard Lee (vocals/guitar), Paul Crutchfield (vocals/percussion) and Norman Durham (vocals/bass/keyboards) - when they accepted an offer to effectively become the studio group in 1976 whilst they transformed themselves from rock band Pipeline. They toured and recorded as the Universal Robot Band for two years before deciding to set out on their own again, as Kleeer.

Soul in the 'holm
last saturday in Stockholm was a treat. I was introduced to the deep, deep collection and point mixes of Sadar Bahar. Based in Chicago, Sadar commands respect as being one of the deepest disco dj around. A digger indeed. One with a liking for uncovering plenty of b-sides and album cuts that others miss. More importantly, he's a party dj. These joints rocked the record nerds and all those who couldn't care less.

Diversion ahead
So here it is, my first offering to this most auspicious of competitions. Its ticks all the right boxes for a boogie classic. But the best bit is half way through when the breakdown kicks in. And oh what a breakdown, starting with ascending synths straight into dramatic keyboards followed by vocal effects overkill with finally a flute melody! Move over Michelle, Karen's taken over.

It began in the early hours in that ghetto disco haven that is the boogie down penge. The TI2TB crew trying to out do each other to claim the boogie selecter crown. After many disputes, much foul play and plenty of wicked music we have yet to decide a winner. Since our key members have either emigrated or are up to their ears in nappies the only way to settle this is on the world wide web baby!
So, the rules are simple. Each of us will post a badass tune, points will be awarded and eventually the boogie master shall claim victory...and his name will be stern.HA!!
It's all about finding greatness so no edits allowed, strictly originals.
We'll try and keep them coming as fast as possible so check back regularly, give us your opnions, inane babble and random record chat.
Let the games begin...

Electrickery
One of the great things about contributing to a music blog is sharing all the great music you love and are listening to. As well as being able to witter on about nothing in particular. There are a lot of people out there doing the same thing but some blogs are a cut above the rest. You know the ones that consistently unearth nuggets of old gold that you never knew existed. They do all the digging for you and save your knees the hassle of many hours crouching down looking through dusty crates.
One of those that I make sure I check into regularly is Beat Electric. If boogie, laser soul and electro funk float your boat then check them out. This crew really do excel at finding some dancefloor killers.

What am I supposed to do?
Due to popular request we are going to be releasing all the original TI2TB boat party CD's on MP3. So if your CD has stopped working then tune in for the MP3's including Volume One which was only originally released on C90 tape. Plus look out for some exclusive guest mixes from some wicked DJ's which are totally in the TI2TB spirit. But at the end of the day you can't get more Take it 2 the Bridge than this.
Stevie Wonder - If You Really Love Me
Ain't no mountain high
After a whistle stop tour back in the UK, I am now a world away from the South London streets. Yesterday I nearly ran over a bear whilst careering down the downhill park. It did not come without it's marks though. My shoulder has a massive gash from eating the dirt and I'm sure there is more to come. From speaking to the locals I'm sure I will add to my broken elbow and rib from the winter at some point this summer. So in a blatant attempt to curry favour with the mountain gods here is a classic Uncle B tune.
Inner Life - Ain't No Mountain High Enough
One crew member missing
There was only one thing missing from the 10th anniversary party. Mr Stern Funk, Tooting Charles. Original crew member. In honour of the legend here are some classic Stern Funk tunes. Including a couple of dance floor killers that I had never heard until they were dropped by the man himself. Big up the Stockholm Firm!
