Reach Up - Toney Lee

A warm up tune for the boogie off - an unusual number with a killer bass - a truly cheesy lyric " sung by a bloke in an 80's leather jacket to boot" much sampled and copied through most genre's of house music.... I chose this as it is a hidden gem......

enjoy and mark me up as I have this on original Vinyl...

If there were extra points for cheese, you would definitely be the winner...

the only flaw on this one mister budgie, is that it was awfully covered by 'phats and small' and now i cannot see past the cheesy 90's dance version.

for that reason i will only be able to give you a miserly 5 out of 10.

I will not be marking according to the criteria set out before,my marking will be based on how each tune moves me.

This should really be an instrumental. Even if you blank out the phats and small foolishness that guy is one dirty cheesemonger and he dances like my dad. But the music is wicked!
I'm giving it a 6

Just too much fromage in those vocals for me I'm afraid. Plus got to mark you down as there is a better version out there, the aforementioned instrumental.

4 out of 10 from me.

Rich ,what you smoking these days? how can you vote 'phats n smalls/charlies dad dancing' higher than donna Mcgee? your musical compass is well off mate, who said boogie could not be beautiful?

let me quote you something from the back of the 80s compilation 'BOOGIE TUNES' that will allow you to realign your boogie barometer and may also finally clear up the controversial revisionist theory that boogie originated in Boogieville Arizona USA :

as written on the back of the album cover:

" What is Boogie? 'Boogie' is not a style of music. It does not come from an area of America, it does not come from a record label, it wasn't played at one type of club. we call it 'boogie' because its a good-time and uplifting word that makes us think of great evenings spent dancing to great music. You know you have walked into a boogie function because everyone is dancing. Boogie people love music and love dancing.... Organise a party for this weekend, get yourself a good sound system, get your dancing shoes out, put this album on and boogie."

this is not sour grapes, i am just worried about your wellbeing, i know you have been stressed recently, maybe its effecting you, maybe you need to go to some boogie therapy workshops, maybe your getting a recuurence of that virus you had a few years back, maybe theres still some 'hard bag' left in your blood stream?

BOOGIE IS AN ART FORM NOT A SCIENCE

well after that little rant, heres how the scores are panning out with Steve and Dave still to vote:

charlie 23.5
Bez 22.5
jensen 22
rich 15 (i did not include your vote for yourself)
steve 12+ (tbc rich you did not mark steve)
dave ????

ps rich i am still shocked that you marked Donna Mcgee so low, get off the crack pipe and get back to 'boogie academy', or is the 'fix' on? how much are you being paid to vote Donna out? i bet its one of those Malaysian betting syndicates that got Bruce Grobellaar to cheat in the '80s, i know times are tough at the moment in the housing market, but did you really have to sell me and donna down the river for a quick buck? this is scandalous, this is an outrage, this has rocked boogie to its core, how can boogie ever recover?

who gives a toss, whats everyone up to this weekend, anyone actually going to carnival?

love

bez

ps Richard i will hunt you down like a pig dog for dishonouring my record collection with your lowly pig dog mark of 5/10. Beware i am watching you this very minute!

I have put dave and bez on a 5 as they are going down the wrong boogie road.....

So as I have managed to upset you all with my marking techniques............I would like to finish off the job with some marking comments....(good am i looking forward to the replies!).............. it appears as if Bez is out to mark tunes equal to his with less marks, then follow it with a polite sorry....- purely on the bases he has it! (but bez you aren't following the rules!!!) so technically Dave should have won yes???

I see the rivalry between steve and charlie has also got to the stage where violence may start to appear - Jensen is on the fence in true slipper style but just like in the final I feel he will show his true loyalties and jump on a bandwagon the question is who will win over the slipper????.... Steve marks fair but does need to pull out some older gems, as we all know he has them or is it a subtle ploy?? Dave a late arrival to the scene but has gone for a similar choice as Bez.... will he mark the same as well (Concrete drum platform indeed !!!! - I though you is street dude... Jazz Ponce!

Bez..

I would hope the back of an Album called "Boogie Tunes" would advocate you get a good system and play the record.... and just because it was made in 1980 does not mean it is the old testament of boogie tunes....Oh NO my friends....... didn't they also bring out
"Boogie Tunes II" "Now thats what I call Boogie" & "Ultimate wedding Boogie" in 81' 82' & 83'

Rare Groove... A tune that is Rare... undiscovered.... re-found..... reborn even... I get the concept..... But I stand firm by what I believe is inherent to Boogie and the term BOOGIE OFF ........ not disco, not retro, not soul, not make me sweat in a spandex catsuit off.....

So for the next selection of tunes I challenge you all to drop a Boogie Tune you would play at the peak of your sets...your best boogie tune.... one that never fails to please.... and then lets see who has the radar on point - and .... try and keep it fresh please.... or shall I let that rule slip this time around as well.

Got to go as the boogie I have needs to go back in the fridge (if it gets too hot it could cause the world's crust to melt! FACT)

And I always though music brought people together in harmony
