Can't get enough of Carol

Lets amp this up for the second round. The version I have of this back in the UK, currently sitting in my Dad's garage getting dusty, has an intro where Carol thanks all the New York metro DJ's. I'm sure they were thanking her for such a surefire dancefloor filler. Bass, piano and synths all combining together to make you sweat. Look out for the Ulysses 82 edit of this as well which leaves all the components in there, extends the intro and the bass firing.

Sharon Brown - Specialize in Love

As the triumphant winner of round one, the big man gets to post first. So to kick off round 2 here is Bez's boogie blurb.

Don't know much about Sharon Brown, what I do know is that this tune is a mean little boogie banger, out in 1982 and mixed by Tee Scott, it is truly a killer. Greg Wilson opened my ears (I think so anyway as I was a little bit frazzled most of the weekend) to this tune at the Rizla Bar at Bestival last year, in what I reckon was the best set I have heard for years. Check it out. Pure class, without a hint of cheese.

Boogie is an artform not a science

After much heated discussion, contentious marking and debate about what is boogie, we have a winner of round one. What was supposed to be over in a week has dragged on for a month but finally we made it to a decision. The inaugural winner of the boogie off is Donna McGhee - You Should Have Told Me as submitted by Bezmondo.

I'm going to keep this post short and sweet as there has been enough said about this weeks' entries. But if there is anyone vaguely bothered what the scores were then contact us and we'll let you know. So well done Bez, keep 'em coming and bring on round 2. In the meantime I thought I would post a couple of songs which sum up what the competition is all about. Couldn't have said it better myself Errol.

THIS BICKERING IS POINTLESS

In the words of Imperial Despot Grand Moff Tarkin - 'This bickering is pointless'

From this day forth let love into the world and cease this endless boogie bickering

I agree with the Slipper (aka Jensen) that we should just post the tunes, give our marks and leave it at that. Hopefully this will encourage the outside world to get involved, post comments, download, and maybe even challenge in future boogie offs?

I definitely think there is scope to open the competition to the masses? maybe with a couple of tickets for our next boat party as prizes for the outstanding boogie tune entered from the outside world? watch this blog!

Ramona Brooks 'I Dont Want You Back'

Ok here we go on behalf of latecomer dj hudge we have the last minute lady ramona...

Just when you thought you`d got away without the hudge. Boo yaa.

On the right side of that fine line between Boogie and Disco im gonna hit you off with Ramona Brooks and her 1980 track 'I Dont Want You Back' on Q records for my first installment.

With awesome production this tune comprises an expertly placed detuned guitar, big strings and a concrete percussive platform in the chorus that sets you up nicely for Ramona`s soulful vocal style and the killer slap bass breakdown just over half way through. Get ready for another wash Bez!

I`ve got it on a re-issue not original but its still a choice find im sure you`ll agree.

This tune is dope! Enjoy!

Reach Up - Toney Lee

A warm up tune for the boogie off - an unusual number with a killer bass - a truly cheesy lyric " sung by a bloke in an 80's leather jacket to boot" much sampled and copied through most genre's of house music.... I chose this as it is a hidden gem......

enjoy and mark me up as I have this on original Vinyl...

Flumpy Healing

Due to overwelming demand I am posting this phenomenal version of Marvin's classic sexual healing. Otherwise known as the flumps tune, this brass band classic connects the dots between detroit soul, new orleans spirituals and err...flumps. Specially out to uncle biggie.

Unsung Boogie Queen

Disclaimer: This boogie off entry is going up on behalf of the busy new father in the TI2TB family, Bez. Well, I'm not taking the blame for his smut.

Wow, I cannot get enough of this tune, I am wet just thinking about it, quality quality quality, boogie as it should be: fat, soulful vocals and with a little bit for you electro boogie monsters out there. Donna is an unsung boogie queen, better known for 'it ain't no big thing' and the big TI2TB fave 'Mr Blind Man'. She pulls out all the stops in this mega rare 12". Try and find it at your peril, its going for silly money at the moment. I had to get it from a Ebay dealer in the states. Better go and wipe myself down before I listen to it again!

History of hip-hop

I am now able to drive on the right hand side of the road after passing my Canadian road test at the second attempt. Considering I work half an hour away from Whistler in Pemberton it's just as well. Finally I can get to drive our new car to work and appreciate being a car owner again with all the associated pleasures and pains. The best thing is cranking the tunes and preparing playlists to match the time it takes to drive there and back.

One thing which is on rotation on the ipod, is the history of hip-hop podcasts as recorded by the Rub. If you don't know about them already, this crew are party DJ's out of New York. So far they have recorded 21 volumes covering 1979 to 1999 full of familiar stuff and new. Can't recommend it enough, particularly for driving mountain roads. Here's the link.

Bridge slapping

Steely Dan - Peg is a classic boat party tune rinsed by our man Mr Bezmondo. Check out the video where they explain how the song was composed. Its fascinating to see how this tune was crafted and interesting that it took a fair few attempts to get the guitar solo down. Great candid moments from the session musicians as well. Especially from the bass guitarist, Mr Chuck Rainey. He comes out with a top quote that could easily have come from one of us, "that bridge seemed to be a slapping thing".

Gladys Knight and The Pips - Save the overtime for me

Gladys Maria Knight, "The Empress of Soul,"[1][2] (born May 28, 1944) is a seven-time Grammy Award-winning American R&B/soul singer, actress, humanitarian and author. She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, the most famous incarnation of which also included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.

Visions (1983)
The single was "Save The Overtime (For Me)," one of several songs co-written by Gladys, Bubba and Sam Dees. They produced several tunes ("Heaven Sent"), but the hit was helmed by Rickey Smith, who also worked on "Ain't No Greater Love" with Richard Rudolph. "When You're Far Away" is an early Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis tune, though Edmund Sylvers got the production credit.

By the way check the video on You Tube for some Breakdance Electric Boogaloo Badness.

The Universal Robot Band

My Boogie Off Tune - 1st

The Universal Robot Band were an American music group comprising Gregory Carmichael, Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess and Woody Cunningham.
They were formed by Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael in 1976, their debut single was "Dance And Shake Your Tambourine". They reformed the band in 1982 for 'Barely Breaking Even'.

Profile:

The Greg Carmichael-Patrick Adams-Leroy Burgess connection produced many magical recordings, including those by Carmichael's infrequently recorded Universal Robot Band. "Barely Breakin' Even" is a legendary boogie track and the inspiration behind the name of the great British reissue label.

Consisted of the members of Kleeer - Woody Cunningham (vocals/drums), Richard Lee (vocals/guitar), Paul Crutchfield (vocals/percussion) and Norman Durham (vocals/bass/keyboards) - when they accepted an offer to effectively become the studio group in 1976 whilst they transformed themselves from rock band Pipeline. They toured and recorded as the Universal Robot Band for two years before deciding to set out on their own again, as Kleeer.

Soul in the 'holm

last saturday in Stockholm was a treat. I was introduced to the deep, deep collection and point mixes of Sadar Bahar. Based in Chicago, Sadar commands respect as being one of the deepest disco dj around. A digger indeed. One with a liking for uncovering plenty of b-sides and album cuts that others miss. More importantly, he's a party dj. These joints rocked the record nerds and all those who couldn't care less.
Sadar Mix
So thanks out to Marc 7 for making it all happen. Stockholm people get yourselves down to his thursday night Revolution at Laroy for more goodness.
